Hugh Masekela presents Songs of Masekela 10th October - 14th October 2012

Featuring dazzling performances by MASEKELA himself and the soulful and dynamic SIBONGILE KHUMALO, this show operates like a unique and extravagant jazz gig. The band takes centre stage surrounded by a group of multi-talented performers in this celebration of music, song and dance from across Africa and the Diaspora. We are treated to songs by Joseph Shabalala, Dorothy Masuka and Miriam Makeba and many, many more – including, of course, numbers composed by MASEKELA himself. Following an incredible take on Ladysmith Black Mambazo's Nomathemba the music then swings through the cotton fields of the Mississippi and the old gospel of the American South, via Nigeria with Fela Kuti's Languta, before returning to South Africa for the finale. Directed by James Ngcobo.

Songs of Migration marks a creative high point in the long and celebrated career of the legendary South African trumpeter, composer and lyricist HUGH MASEKELA.

African-American/Argentinian soul singer, guitarist, and songwriter, Raul Midón, is known for his silky, soulful tenor and dazzling, percussive guitar style – a syncopated, flamenco and jazz-infused approach in which bass, harmony, and melodic lines take life with jaw-dropping virtuosity. As a child he played drums before graduating in guitar and jazz studies and then working as a backing singer for Latin-pop artists Shakira, Ricky Martin and Alejandro Sanz. Since launching his solo career in 2002 he has been featured in documentaries about Herbie Hancock (Possibilities), producer Arif Mardin (All My Friends Are Here) and Bill Withers (Still Bill); released three albums and collaborated with Jason Mraz, Marcus Miller and Roberta Flack. An astonishing, mesmerising, genre-defying artist. Unmissable.

10th October 2012 A new club and live music night opened by The UKs foremost vocalist, the uber talented Cleveland Watkiss in collaboration with Saxophonist Tim Whitehead,These two world class musicians will be playing jazz with the emphasis on music for people to dance to, Jazz dance in the 1970/80s was a really buzzing time for places like Dingwalls,Horseshoe Hotel,Crackers had regular nights where you could see the dance floor heaving to some brilliant footwork from enthusiastic dancers. This new night from Cleveland and Tim aims to bring back some of that excitement and edginess to live Jazz in London.

Fred Wesley is the trombonist, composer, arranger, bandleader and author known worldwide as one of the architects of funk music. Fred's work with Godfather of SoulJames Brown in the 1970s established him as the world's funkiest trombonist. He is also famed for his worko with George Clinton, Bootsy Collins,m Parliament, Funkadelic, the Count Basie Orchestra, Ray Charles, Van Morrison & Cameo.

Along with Maceo Parker & Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley makes up the classic JB's Horns who guest with other artists such as Lenny Kravitz, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more.

Fred Wesley is responsible for many rare groove anthems such as "House Party", "Blow Your Head", "Use me", "Same Beat", "Rockin' funky watergate" and many more.

The New JB's are Fred Wesley ( Trombone ), Ernie Fields Jr. ( Saxophone ), Bruce Cox ( Drums ), Dwayne Dolphin ( Bass ), Reggie Ward ( Guitar ), Peter Madsen ( Keys ), Barney McCall ( Keys ), Gary Winter ( Trumpet ).

This summer sees the release of the great lost Fred Wesley & the JB's album "Watermelon Man" which was originally due for release in 1973 on People Records but has been in the vaults until now.
