Trouble Funk - 35th Anniversary Concert
+ DJ Snowboy ( Meet me at the Go-Go )
+ DJ Chris Philips ( Jazz FM )
Trouble Funk, a musical group born on the streets of Washington, D.C., is synonymous with the emergence of the non-stop, percussion driven, best seen live, experience the party, audience participatory call and response, grassroots, homegrown music called Go-Go. As the world wide ambassadors of this musical genre, Go-Go, a distant, but older cousin of Hip-Hop, Trouble Funk has taken their sound from the gritty streets of D.C. to the clubs of the nation and the festivals around the world for the past 30 plus years.
The band and their sound, developed by mixing an uproarious blend of swinging, up-tempo 70’s funk with a 60’s style horn section, heavily laden with infectious percussion, topped off with booming vocals and the genre’s trademark call and response, burst onto the music scene in 1978. Trouble Funk, in its infancy, consisted of the writing team of band leader, bassist and vocalist Tony “Big Tony” Fisher, keyboardists Robert “Syke Dyke” Reed and James Avery and trumpet player Taylor Reed. The group was rounded out with the musical prowess of drummer Emmett Nixon, percussionists Mack Carey and Timothy “Teebone” David, guitarist Chester Davis, trombonist Gerald Reed and saxophonist David Rudd while they peppered the musical landscape of the 1980’s with anthems “Drop the Bomb”, “Pump Me Up”, “Let’s Get Small”, “So Early in the Morning”, “Saturday Night Live From Washington, D.C., Parts 1 & 2”, “Say What?” and two R&B/ Hip-Hop Billboard charting tracks, “Still Smokin’” and “Good to Go”.
Drop the Bomb” was the first Go-Go record to be released outside of Washington, D.C. and was released on the pioneering label, Sugar Hill Records.
Trouble Funk, with their raw, party driven style, was able to capture the attention of musical enthusiasts of a variety of genres catapulting themselves onto the national and international music scene. They would frequently tour with notable punk rock acts Minor Threat and the Big Boys, while still gracing the stage on major music festivals with legendary artists such as Curtis Mayfield, Parliament Funkadelic, Red Hot Chili Peppers, UB40, Def Leppard and Fishbone, to name a few. Trouble Funk also recorded with Kurtis Blow and appeared in his video, “I’m Chillin’”.
From 1986 to 1988, Trouble Funk toured extensively throughout the United States playing legendary venues such as Madison Square Garden and the Apollo Theatre and on worldwide stages with multiple stops in Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Spain, Nice, Denmark, Germany and Japan. A stop in Switzerland included a performance at the highly regarded Montreux Jazz Festival. 1994 brought Trouble Funk back to Japan for an extended tour.
In the mid 80’s, while Trouble Funk was signed to Island Records, their live performances were captured on the big screen in the film “Good to Go” starring Art Garfunkel. The film, produced by Island Pictures, showcased Go-Go music and most prominently, the music of Trouble Funk with the group featured on 5 of the 13 tracks on the soundtrack.
During Trouble Funk’s obligation with Island Records, they worked with the legendary Bootsy Collins who produced the album “Trouble Over Here, Trouble Over There”.
Pump Me Up” is one of the most sampled tracks of all time being sampled in over 70 different songs by various artists including Will Smith, Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster
Melle Mel and the Furious Five, M/A/R/R/S, Guy, Public Enemy, 2 Live Crew, George Clinton, Vanilla Ice, EPMD, Run-DMC, George Michael and Black Eyed Peas to name a few, with some gaining chart topping hits. Pump Me Up” is also featured in Style Wars and the fictional R&B radio station WildStyle in the game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Trouble Funk return to play London for the first time in over 20 years to celebrate their 35th Anniversary. Do not miss this event - tickets will fly out so buy now.

ANTHONY DAVID

ANTHONY DAVID

Islington Assembly Hall

https://assemblyhall.ticketabc.com/events/anthony-da/
Raised in Savannah GA, Anthony made the move to ATL, and  hit the ground running in the local music scene. He found a long time friend and music collaborator in a then unknown India Arie, and became a part of her success.Writing and producing on her first 3 albums  yielded grammies and numerous other awards, while he also toured singing backup for her. Arie pushed him to  the front by her 2nd tour, having Anthony open up for her across the country, which  led to a deal with Local Independent label, BRASH MUSIC.
At BRASH, David wrote and co produced 2 critically acclaimed albums, “3 chords and the truth” and“Red Clay Chronicles”, which also secured deals in Europe (Dome Records) and Japan (Village Again), leading Anthony to tour worldwide several times over, making new fans along the way. The acclaim prompted Universal Republic record to get involved, compiling the best songs from the two indie albums,  repackaging them as ACEY DUECY.  The added exposure took the single “Words”, a duet with Arie to chart placement, and nomination for a GRAMMY in ’08.  It was also the album that exposed the First lady, Michelle Obama, to Anthony’s talent, who then brought him to the attention of the President himself, Barack Obama, who name checked Anthony as a constant on his iPod.
For the next album, “As above, so below” David inked a deal with E1/Purpose records and travelled to Nashville to work with producer Shannon Sanders. They produced Anthony’s best record to date, pushing the boundaries, and expanding on what people have come to expect from R&B. Taking on political topics (Reach Ya), Religious (God Said), with his trademark storytelling (Backstreet) still in tow, and razor sharp. The leading single, “4evermore” stormed the radio and gave Anthony his first #1 record, while the reggae/latin tinged “Body Language” tore up dance floors all across the UK. A tour to Kenya,  inspired Anthony to become a part of the “Give Africa Hope” campaign that brought awareness to the East Africa famine. During that period, David wrote and released  3 new songs along with remixes from “As Above, so below”, shooting the video in Kenya for the title track “#Locationlocationlocation”. The tune was a homage to Carl Sagan’s “pale blue dot” and also a plea to share the resources of the planet. He also got intimately involved with AWOL (All Walks of life) an arts program for children back in his hometown of Savannah, pushing to get it established in Atlanta by 2013.
Currently in production for his fourth studio album, titled “Love Out Loud”Anthony David constantly pushes the boundaries, and broadens peoples expectation from both him, and the community he represents. “I’ve never been one to shy away from titles, boxes, whatever you wanna call em, but I will EXPAND those boxes” is a quote that Anthony lives by. From day one it’s always been about consistency for David, and he continues to provide what people expect from him in as many ways as he is able. Raw, honest, pure, music from and for the soul.

Roscoe Mitchell back at Cafe Oto for a Two Day Residency

Roscoe Mitchell / John Edwards / Tani Tabbal - Two Day Residency
Roscoe Mitchell & John Edwards
Tuesday 29 January 2013

Wednesday 30 January 2013

Door Times : 8pm

The legendary Roscoe Mitchell returns to Oto following two incredible nights here last March. One of the key members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Mitchell is one of the leading figures in American creative music to emerge from the explosive musical revolutions of the 1960s. His early work, including albums such as Sound, radically expanded the language of free jazz to include new instrumentation and compositional strategies and he's carried on enlarging our musical horizons ever since, working with a staggering variety of ensembles as well as honing one of the most distinctive and powerful solo saxophone voices. For this concert he'll be joined by the incredible bass player John Edwards and Tani Tabbal - a drummer who has worked with everyone from the Sun Ra Arkestra to Anthony Braxton and switches easily between odd and mixed meteres, combining world rhythms and a passion for pushing jazz to the outer realms of the avant-garde. The combined experience, imagination and sheer verve of this trio promises to take the music in several new directions simultaneously. Not a night to stay at home

Roscoe Mitchell & John Edwards photo by Scott McMillan

ROSCOE MITCHELL / saxophones, flute

One of the top saxophonists to come out of Chicago's AACM movement of the mid-'60s, Roscoe Mitchell is a particularly strong and consistently adventurous improviser long associated with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. After getting out of the military, Mitchell led a hard bop sextet in Chicago (1961) which gradually became much freer.

He was a member of Muhal Richard Abrams's Experimental Band and a founding member of the AACM in 1965. Mitchell's monumental Sound album (1966) introduced a new way of freely improvising, utilizing silence as well as high energy and "little instruments" as well as conventional horns. Lester Bowie and Malachi Favors were on that date and Mitchell's 1967 follow-up Old/Quartet.

With the addition of Joseph Jarman and Philip Wilson (who was later succeeded by Famoudou Don Moye), the Art Ensemble of Chicago was born. The colorful unit was one of the most popular groups in the jazz avant-garde and Mitchell was an integral part of the band. Roscoe Mitchell (who, in addition to his main horns, plays clarinet, flute, piccolo, oboe, baritone and bass saxophones) also was involved in individual projects through the years and has recorded as a leader for Delmark, Nessa, Sackville, Moers Music, 1750 Arch, Black Saint, Cecma and Silkheart in settings ranging from large ensembles to unaccompanied solo concerts. -- Scott Yanow, All-Music Guide
"[Mitchell] displayed amazing energy, stamina and focus. His circular breathing formed a prominent trait of the performance, the long continuous outbursts fizzing with modulations to keep his bristling roller-coaster abstractions aloft." - AllAboutJazz
JOHN EDWARDS / double bass

John Edwards is a true virtuoso whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role, whether playing solo or with others. Perpetually in demand, he has played with Evan Parker, Sunny Murray, Derek Bailey, Joe McPhee, Lol Coxhill, Peter Brötzmann, Mulatu Astatke and many others.

TANI TABBAL / drums

In Chicago, at age five, Tani Tabbal began playing and exploring drums, and by age fourteen he was a professional, playing and performing with Oscar Brown Jr. By the time age seventeen rolled around, Tani had already played with Phil Coran and was about to head out on tour with Sun Ra and his Arkestra.

Tani Tabbal became known for his fluidity with odd and mixed meters. His passion for the avant-garde and in pushing the jazz medium along with blending world rhythms, brought him in professional contact with jazz legends Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, Oliver Lake, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, and Richard Davis among others. He also played with the Detroit avante garde group Griot Galaxy. Tabbal has recorded, performed and toured with Roscoe Mitchell, David Murray, James Carter, Geri Allen, and Casandra Wilson, to name a few. Tabbal is also in the percussion ensemble ‘Pieces of Time’ along with Andrew Cyrille, Famadou Don Moye, and Obo Addy.

Along with being a jazz drummer, Tani also plays percussion instruments of West Africa (djembe and doundoun), North India (tablas), and North Africa (doumbec).

“This Woman is Magnificent” – Bette Midler
Jocelyn Brown is a woman with a powerful, soul shaking voice that reaches out with extended arms and engulfs your musical desires.
“I Got The Power” a sample of Jocelyn’s voice Snap’s international one single “The Power”, totally astonished the Artiste herself when arriving in a club for a performance and hearing her voice repeatedly.  She witnessed, first hand, the audience’s response to the powerful vocals featured on this hit.  “I think it is great that people love and use my voice”, says Jocelyn, “as long as I can make people happy with it, I feel like I am doing my job!”
And doing her job she is!  In fact this seasonal musical veteran began singing in public at the age of three in the church, and at gig’s with her family.  She then first gained national attention with the release of her debut album for Warner Brothers Records “One From The Heart” in 1984.  With cuts produced by Jellybean Benitez and the teams of Hubert Eaves/ James Batton and Russ Titleman/Rob Mounsey, Jocelyn featured eight powerful cuts which include hits like “Love’s Gonna Get You” and the perennial Club Classical “Somebody Else’s Guy” written by Jocelyn and her sister Annette.
However, as modest as she is, Jocelyn has established quite an impressive portfolio working with stellar names such as Luther Vandross, Bette Midler, John Lennon, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack, George Benson, Teddy Pendergrass, Culture Club, Masters At Work and many others.
She is also noted as being one of New York City’s premier jingle Artistes, and had been associated with several television and radio campaigns for companies and products which include McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Vicks Nyquil, Bell Atlantic Telephone, Sprite, Coca Cola, Dr Pepper, Pepsi, Welch’s Grape Soda, A & P Supermarkets, American Express, Mediprin, Jellow Pudding, Maxwell House, Greyhound Bus Company and a host of others.  Jocelyn has also been featured on many Film Sound Tracks such as Walt Disney Film’s hit animation “Hercules, Lilo & Stitch” and has appeared on a number of top rated TV shows including ”Saturday Night Live”.
Jocelyn’s own recent material demonstrates her ability to diversify her talents, since she produces it herself with collaborations from other talented UK and US producers and musicians, for her production company.  It’s Joycee Music Ltd.  This personal production work, combined with Jocelyn’s musical talent is compelling evidence of this Artiste’s magical appeal both behind the scenes, and on stage.
Despite the acclaim garnered by her debut album, Jocelyn remains level-headed and grateful for her musical talents.  “I don’t really think about being a “star”, she insists, “if that is going to happen, then it’s in God’s hands and I thank him for all his blessings.  I’ve worked with some talented musicians, producers, super performers, radio and television presenters and most of the best of all the DJ’s in the world.”

"I’m an artist, a musician, a magician, a writer, a singer; Im everything. My name is Lee from the African jungle, originally from West Africa. I’m a man from somewhere else, but my origin is from Africa, straight to Jamaica through reincarnation; reborn in Jamaica..."

Lee "Scratch" Perry (born Rainford Hugh Perry, on March 20, 1936, in Kendal, Jamaica) is a Grammy award-winning reggae and dub artist, who has been highly influential in the development and acceptance of reggae and dub music in Jamaica and overseas. He employs numerous pseudonyms, such as "Pipecock Jaxxon" and "The Upsetter". Arguably the first creatively driven, "artist-producer" in modern recorded music, Lee "Scratch" Perry occupies the highest level of music making - standing comfortably next to pioneers like George Martin, Phil Spector, and Brian Wilson.

Perry's musical career began in the late 1950s as a record seller for Clement Coxsone Dodd's sound system. Working with Joe Gibbs, Perry continued his recording career, but once again, financial problems caused conflict. Perry broke ranks with Gibbs and formed his own label, Upsetter, in 1968. During the 1970s, Perry released numerous recordings on a variety of record labels that he controlled, and many of his songs were popular in both Jamaica and the UK. He soon became known for his innovative production techniques as well as his eccentric character. In the early 1970s, Perry was one of the producers whose mixing board experiments resulted in the creation of dub. In 1973, Perry built a studio in his back yard, The Black Ark, to have more control over his productions and continued to produce notable musicians such as Bob Marley & the Wailers, Junior Byles, The Heptones, and Max Romeo. With his own studio at his disposal, Perry remained behind the mixing desk for many years, producing songs and albums that stand out as a high point in reggae history.

By 1978, stress and unwanted outside influences began to take their toll: both Perry and The Black Ark quickly fell into a state of disrepair. Eventually, the studio burned to the ground. Perry has constantly insisted that he burned the Black Ark himself in a fit of rage, but it has also been said that fire could have been an accident due to faulty wiring. After the demise of the Black Ark in the early 1980s, Perry spent time in England and the United States, performing live and making records with a variety of collaborators. It was not until the late 1980s, when he began working with British producers Adrian Sherwood and Neil Fraser (who is better known as Mad Professor), that Perry's career began to get back on solid ground again. Perry also has attributed the recent resurgence of his creative muse to his deciding to quit drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis. Perry stated in an interview that he wanted to see if "it was the smoke making the music or Lee Perry making the music. I found out it was me and that I don't need to smoke."

Perry now lives in Switzerland. Although he celebrated his 70th birthday in 2006, he continues recording and performing to enthusiastic audiences in Europe and North America. His modern music is a far cry from his reggae days in Jamaica; many now see Perry as more of a performance artist in several respects. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Perry 100 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. More recently, he teamed up with a group of Swiss musicians and performed under the name Lee Perry and the White Belly Rats, and made a brief visit to the United States using the New York City based group Dub Is A Weapon as his backing band.

Currently there are two feature length movies made about his life and work: Volker Schaner's 'Vision Of Paradise' and 'The Upsetter' by filmmakers Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough.
